A molecular formula lists which atoms a molecule contains and how many of each. That is all it does.

It does not tell you what the molecule does in the body, whether it is safe, or whether it works.

It also does not confirm that what is in a vial matches the name on the label, which is a separate question requiring separate testing.

This page explains what chemical identity data does and does not establish. It is about how to read the numbers on a compound page, not about what any compound does.

What the formula actually says

BPC-157's formula is C62H98N16O22 and its molecular weight is 1,419.5. That means a molecule of it contains 62 carbon atoms, 98 hydrogen, 16 nitrogen and 22 oxygen. It is a complete and precise statement of composition.2

It is also silent on everything people want to know. Two molecules with identical formulas can behave completely differently depending on how those atoms are arranged, and a formula does not record arrangement.1

Why this site publishes formulas anyway

Because identity is checkable and mechanism usually is not. A formula and a PubChem identifier can be verified by anyone in seconds. A sentence about what a compound does to a cell cannot, unless a study is attached.1

For 59 of the 68 compounds here we can publish a verified identity. For most of them we cannot publish a mechanism without inventing one, so we do not.1

The time we got it wrong

Name lookup is literal, and short names collide. Searching PubChem for MGF returned trifluoromagnesate — formula F3Mg-, molecular weight 81.3 — an inorganic salt with no relationship to a growth-factor peptide of roughly 2,800 daltons.1

That result was published on the MGF page as its chemical identity, and worse, written into the page's structured data as a statement that the two were the same substance. Nothing flagged it, because the lookup succeeded — it simply succeeded at the wrong thing.1

What a formula cannot do for a buyer

It cannot tell you what is in a container. Knowing that BPC-157 is C62H98N16O22 says nothing about whether a particular vial contains that, contains it at the stated amount, or contains anything at all.2

That question needs analytical testing of the specific batch, and a document reporting it. The formula is the reference standard such a test would compare against — useful, and not a substitute for the test.12

Common questions

Why do some compounds here have no formula?

Because we could not resolve the name to a molecule with confidence. 9 of 68 are in that position, and a blank is deliberate — a wrong formula is far worse than a missing one.

Does a higher molecular weight mean a stronger compound?

No. Weight relates to size, which affects things like how a compound is absorbed. It has no relationship to potency.

Is PubChem authoritative?

It is a well-maintained public database aggregating many sources. The failure mode is not bad data but the wrong record — matching your name to a molecule you did not mean.
