Sharps
Sharps is the collective term for used needles, syringes and anything else that can puncture skin and must be disposed of as clinical waste.
The reason for a dedicated puncture-resistant container is injury to other people — waste handlers, family members, cleaners — rather than to the person who used the item.
Many pharmacies, local authorities and some manufacturers operate free collection or supply schemes. It is worth asking before buying anything.
What it is not
Sharps waste is not household waste and is generally not accepted in ordinary recycling. Rules on disposal differ substantially by country and even by locality.
