Research use only
Research use only is a labelling designation meaning a product is not sold for use in humans.
It carries specific consequences. No regulator has assessed that product for human use, no prescriber is involved, and no pharmacist is accountable for what the container holds.
It is not a formality or a disclaimer added out of caution. It describes the legal and commercial basis on which something is being sold, and the absence of every check that applies to a medicine.
What it is not
Research use only does not mean 'the same thing, sold more cheaply'. It means the assurances that attach to a medicine — identity, purity, sterility, accountability — have not been made about that container by anyone.
